The Dolls

So I'm sitting here cutting the heads off small plastic babies. Then I'm putting the babies' heads onto curlers and tying them up with some ribbon.

No, I'm not working on a show. Why do you ask?

The Call

Sometimes one conversation with a very smart and important person can answer all kinds of questions and relieve all kinds of stress.

The Cable: Part V

Yes, it's here. But the DVR doesn't work. So the guy had to go out and find a new one. Which leaves me still sitting at home, waiting.

At least there's pizza.

The Cable: Part IV

You know those John Grisham books where one man takes on a big defendant, like the tobacco industry or the blue jeans industry or something? And he wins a huge class action suit that makes millions of dollars for all the little people that the huge company has wronged? The newspaper headlines all compare the situation to David and Goliath and then there's a big movie starring Billy Crudup as the poor innocent victim and Julia Roberts as his upstart attorney, and then it wins all kinds of Oscars and Julia Roberts recements her position as America's Sweetheart.

While I think it would be very nice to be played by Billy Crudup in my movie, unfortunately, I do not have a happy ending, and my lawyer, although he happily paid me $50 bucks for the old grill since I am getting a new smaller one soon, will not be winning me any millions in my suit against the cable company.

That's right. Still no cable. I had to reschedule my appointment one more time for tomorrow. Which means another day of sitting and waiting, watching DVDs of Friends. I might actually be tired of watching Friends by the time I get cable, because that is all I have been able to watch for NEARLY A MONTH NOW.

So we'll see if they show up in their little four hour "window" tomorrow or if I should call Billy and tell him to start memorizing his lines.

The Cable: Part III

No cable yet. I've been sitting here all morning. I have no food in the house. I have no clean clothes. I cannot leave, because I know that is the exact moment when the cable guy will come and go.

Today I have a cable window from 8am to 8pm, even though i work at 3. They, of course, refuse to guarantee that he will arrive before I leave, in which case I must call again to reschedule for tomorrow. Which will give me the same window. Which renders me unable to do ANYTHING EXCEPT SIT AND WAIT FOR THE CABLE TO ARRIVE.

If I hadn't had that $300 steak dinner last night, I'd be starving right now.

The Cable: Part II

And it's still not here. Apparently they called me at 10:10 to tell me that they were here, but I didn't hear my cell phone in the back room. I was, however, sitting in the front room, waiting for the buzzer to go off. Why they didn't bother to push the buzzer, I do not know.

Needless to say, they left, and I sat there for no reason for two more hours. I finally went back and found my phone, and got their stupid message. Then I called the cable company to get them to come back. They told me they would put in an order and I would hear in the next hour.

An hour went by. No word. I called again. They told me that they put an extra alert on my order and I would hear "shortly."

Another hour and a half went by. I now have to leave for work. And they still have not called. The next available date for an appointment is September 20th. In another week and a half. Even though a number of shows premiere next week. (Actually one premiered last night, and I missed it.)

Three phone calls to customer service later, they still have not rescheduled my appointment (which I WAS HERE FOR) and I am going to be at least 30 minutes late for work. That would be if I left now. But instead I'm sitting here complaining online for no reason at all.

MUCH LIKE THE WAY I WAS SITTING IN MY LIVING ROOM ALL DAY LONG.

The Cable

I sat around all morning waiting for the cable guy to show up in that two hour window they give you. Then I waited some more. And now it's two hours after the appointment, and he still hasn't shown up.

Maybe that's because the appointment is for tomorrow.

The Move

Remember back four years ago when I first moved to Chicago? It was quite an ordeal. The whole event was even immortalized here.

That was a long time ago. I lived in that house for over four years, and tonight I finally got everything out and finished the cleaning. (There are still things in the garage for the company, but that's not going out until next week, because the garage door is broken.) It really feels like the end of an era. One that I'm kind of glad is over.

This time, it's been difficult, but not in the same ways. Last time we couldn't find a place and couldn't find a job and couldn't figure out how to start our lives. The actual moving wasn't a very big deal.

This time, I've found that I've accumulated way too much of what can only be called "crap." The movers took care of all the heavy stuff, but I've still had to go up and down the stairs with boxes of things that I didn't have time to pack before they showed up. My truck is currently filled to the brim with boxes and bags that I have to bring up tomorrow. And the unpacking is going to take a considerable amount of time.

This time, the moving was the only big part. Figuring out how to fit it into my busy schedule was, quite frankly, a pain in the ass.

This time, I know more about how to find a place (hire a broker and some movers), I know how to find a job (and, more importantly, I know how to work toward a career), and I know how to start my life.

I'm still not totally sure how to live that life yet, but I'm definitely farther forward than I was back then.
